Jean Dupuis Gilbert

     Jean Dupuis Gilbert deported from France for salt smuggling. In the late 16th century the collection of taxes on certain goods included salt. This not only with neighboring countries but also between provinces. This fee or tax is called salt tax. The salt tax is the source of the largest smuggling, counterfeiting or smuggling saunage salt. The false saunage is to remove the salt from where it was cheaper to place it where the price was higher. Occupation false saunier flourished in Berry. The tax on salt went up, while around some provinces were free of salt tax.

In 1730, more serious cases involving weapons or murder was death, the King allowed the shipment to Canada unwanted salt smugglers. They were however never allowed to return to France under any circumstances.
Gilbert Dupuy and his brother Jean Dupuy returned again to false Savage and faced expatriation.

The brothers arrived in Quebec, Thursday, August 8, 1737, after 60 days at sea on the ship Jazon. Both brothers have smallpox brought by a sailor on the voyage. Fifty people on the ship contacted small pox and three died.
